The exquisitely churchy harmonies take us back to the halcyon days of soul, but the material takes us back to the Doobie Brothers, or is it Christopher Cross? Golden voices and hearts of mush. B-

Modern Heart [Columbia, 1983]
This clean, middle-American pop-funk's commitment to quality is so modest that its "concept" may well be not to stand out. So it takes forever to penetrate. But where most merely professional tunesmiths get irritating with prolonged exposure, Champaign start to glow--modestly, of course. B+
